At OGH, we currently provide assisted living needs for 37 goats across 6 distinct areas. These incredible goats have unique needs, and we take pride in offering them personalized care.
Diet and Nutrition
Due to tooth loss, the goats of assisted living can no longer consume traditional hay. Instead, they enjoy a special diet built for their individual needs: gummy mush. But that’s not all! Our dedicated Goat Guardians prepare a daily blend of Chaffhaye, which combines second-cut Orchard Hay along with beneficial medicinal plants. It’s a nutritious feast that keeps the goats healthy and happy.
Hay and Mineral Bars
In addition to their gummy mush, assisted living goats receive a bale of hay shared among all the stalls. Some still munch on hay, while others playfully pretend to be goats and nibble and spit out what we call hay wads (well chewed on wads of hay). We tailor our approach to each goat’s preferences and needs.
Our mineral bars are customized for each stall. We consider factors like hay bale testing, water quality from our well, and any essential nutrients missing from the island’s soil. It’s all about ensuring optimal health and vitality.
Individualized Care Plans
Every goat has its own digital file, meticulously dated and organized. These files help the Goat Guardians track important details, including reminders for hoof trims and specific issues that arise throughout the year. Whether it’s allergies, mites, or respiratory challenges tied to seasonal changes, we’re on top of it.
Looking Ahead
As of 2024, we’re excited to announce the upcoming construction of a medicinal garden. This new addition will enhance our ability to provide holistic care for all the goats of OGH.
